About Us
Our Story
C^2 was born from a passion project from Matt Lu, a displaced ABChicagonese educator, who has a fetish for corny puns and portmanteaus, oh and multi-cultural exchange. Recognizing the differing dynamics of both isolated (either all Chinese or all foreign) and mixed-culture social groups and networks in Beijing, Matt wanted to create space where those on either sides of the aisle, as well as anywhere in between, would feel comfortable, supported, and a strong sense of belonging predicated on the embrace of diverse ideals and lived experiences. From starting with just a handful of members, we've grown rapidly through the efforts of passionate individuals sharing a vision for egalitarian multiculturalism, empathy-entrepreneurship, and lexical gymnastics in our event names (lol jk). Though many networking platforms and groups exist even in the China-expat scene, C^2 prides itself on balancing the thin line between being a service fraternity, a cultural exchange hub, and an entrepreneurial center for experimenting with new ideas.
C^2 is a nonprofit organization that charges no membership fees. We pride ourselves on putting camaraderie and community-building through mutual respect and appreciation first and foremost before professional networking. If you want to just chill and enjoy finding your tribe, that's cool too!
How we're "different"
Our members span across the globe in diverse lived experiences and heritage from the US to China and everywhere in between. Our differences are what bind us together since they are predicated on a strong bed of consensus: the equal treatment and respect of all persons and cultures based on character and critical thinking over prejudice and stereotypes.
At C^2, we dare to be ourselves, share pieces of ourselves with others as we lay down our privilege to build bridges in new places.
No prestige whoring, no ethnocentric oppressing, no drama queening.
What we do
Our mission is to empower young professionals with international backgrounds to drive positive change in China. We aim to foster a supportive community that encourages cross-cultural exchange, collaboration, and innovation. By leveraging our diverse perspectives and expertise, we strive to tackle some of the most pressing social and environmental challenges facing China today.
In other words, we put on creative events focused on community building, cultural exchange, and social innovation. We give back to the community through philanthropy and service, and we're also working on lifestyle blogs, original content, newsletters, and podcasts!
